New Album & Music Video (The Crooked Road) by Lou Reid and Carolina

LR&C_0079_edited-1Abingdon, VA: The Crooked Road is a 330-mile driving route across Southwest Virginia where authentic American music traditions first took root in mountain communities like Big Stone Gap, Floyd and Galax. Thanks to Lou Reid and Carolina, that road now has an anthem every bit as memorable as the landscape through which it travels.

The band’s newest album, Rollin’ On, has just been released and features the brand new single, “The Crooked Road,” penned by songwriters Ellen Britton and Will Hopkins and certain to become a classic.  Ellen Britton’s co-writer Will Hopkins passed away in 2015.  “The song was Will’s idea and he grew up along The Crooked Road in Rocky Mount, Virginia,” said Britton.  “I loved the song from the start and thought the name itself was evocative.  It speaks to the contrast between our modern and somewhat hectic way of life and a slower way of living.  With that basic idea as the starting point, writing the song came easy.  That was a song that wanted to be written.”

“If we had commissioned someone to write a song to capture the essence of The Crooked Road and our annual Mountains of Music Homecoming event, they couldn’t have done better than the song on this record,” said Jack Hinshelwood, executive director of The Crooked Road. “To have one of the most admired groups in bluegrass pay homage to Virginia’s music heritage in a song of this caliber is truly special.”

“When you start an album, you never really know which songs are going to stand out until you’re done,” said Reid. “And Rollin’ On was no different.  When you listen to the record, ‘The Crooked Road’ has a sparkle to it that’s unmistakable. It makes me smile every time I listen to it.”

2016-rollin-on-album-cover-loureidandcarolinaThe record release by Lou Reid and Carolina coincided with the 2nd Annual Mountains of Music Homecoming, an extraordinary nine-day music and cultural showcase event that took place June 10-18 across Southwest Virginia’s Crooked Road Region.

The release of the new single is accompanied by a new music video, a cooperative effort between The Crooked Road organization and the band. The video is made possible through the generous support of David & Judie Reemsnyder, the Montgomery Museum & Lewis Miller Regional Art Center, the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, and Bill Kornrich.

“The first song I ever learned on guitar was the “Wildwood Flower,” continued Reid.  I watched Mother Maybelle Carter sing that song and play it on guitar and autoharp on a black and white TV along with Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys in the early 60’s.  I didn’t realize until later how much the music from The Crooked Road region would influence my own music and life.  The Crooked Road WILL take you home again!”

Rollin’ On is now available for purchase at, iTunes, Amazon, and other fine retail outlets. Radio stations can access the new album at The music video is viewable at and YouTube.

Benefit Concert for 3-Year-Old NC Boy

Award-winning bluegrass band, Lou Reid and Carolina will host a special benefit concert on October 10, 2010 at 6:00 at MacGray Auditorium located at 474 N. Center St., Statesville, NC, 28677. All proceeds will benefit three-year-old Carter Rorabaugh.  Tickets are $15 at the door and children 12 and under are admitted free of charge. A Silent Auction will also be held during the event. A pdf flyer can be view and/or printed here.Carter, age 3, suffers from Von Hippel Lindeau Disease.  He was recently diagnosed with hemangioma blastoma in his right eye. Doctors at Duke University found that removing the tumor was not possible, because of it’s placement on the optic nerve.  The tumor is spreading, and can possibly spread to his other eye.  This is a VERY RARE case, and because the treatment the doctor’s recommend has never been done on a 3-year-old, the  Rorabaugh’s insurance company has denied coverage of the treatments as they deem it as “experimental.” Treatments are however moving forward in hopes of saving his eye and the vision he has left.

“We are trying to raise as much money as we possibly can for them.  An account has been set up for Carter, and a Paypal account is routed directly so that 100% of all donations you make on our website will go directly to him. We are asking all of our friends and family to help,” said Christy Reid.

She continued by saying, “Our wonderful friends at Rural Rhythm Records have donated 500 gospel CD’s to give out to those who donate to Carter, so any donation of $20 or more will receive a free Rural Rhythm Gospel CD (see list below.) Speaking on behalf of the Rorabaugh family, I would like to sincerely thank all of you who have been praying for little Carter, and encourage you to spread the news of our fundraising efforts.
