Volume Five Wins Two IBMA Awards

Volume Five was honored with two International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards that were presented during the 2017 IBMA Awards Show held at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh.

The first award announced for the band was for Emerging Artist of the Year.  The group features the extraordinary talents of lead vocalist, fiddle player and band leader, Glen Harrell who is joined by Colby Laney on guitar and vocals, Patton Wages on banjo and vocals, Chris Williamson on bass and vocals, and aspiring young talent, Jacob Burleson on mandolin and vocals.

Volume Five was also presented with the prestigious the Song of the Year Award for “I Am A Drifter” written by Donna Ulisse and Marc Rossi. The crowd was delighted with Ulisse’s excitement while accepting the award with Glen Harrell and the band. The chart-topping tune appears on Volume Five’s album Drifter on Mountain Fever Records that debuted last year on Billboard’s Top 10 Bluegrass Album Chart.

Soggy Bottom Boys Headlining The Blue, Brew & Que Festival

The Soggy Bottom Boys are the Grammy Award winning super group of musicians assembled to perform the soundtrack for the major motion picture “O’ Brother Where Art Thou.” The Soggy Boys line-up is comprised of the genre’s top artists: Dan Tyminski, Stuart Duncan, Ron Block, Barry Bales, Pat Enright, and Mike Compton. The smash hit “I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow” was the chart topping hit that carried this album to one of the top selling soundtracks of all-time.

Dan Tyminski (lead on “I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow”, and member of Alison Krauss & Union Station) along with songwriter Harley Allen, and Pat Enright (Nashville Bluegrass Band), won a CMA Award for Single of the Year and a Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals, both for the song written by Dick Burnett.

Throughout his 25-year career fronting his own band, and almost forty years as a major touring performer, Larry Stephenson has been well-recognized and awarded by fans and his peers in the recording industry. In 1996, Stephenson was inducted into the Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame by the Virginia Folk Music Association. Since that time, he has garnered numerous other awards including being named Contemporary Male Vocalist of the Year by the Society and Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America (SPBGMA.) The Official International Bluegrass Association’s World of Bluegrass Kick-Off Party, sponsored by Moonstruck Management, will feature Lonesome River Band who received four IBMA Award Nominations this year.  The party will take place on Tuesday, September 27, 6:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Theatre located 126 E Cabarrus Street in Raleigh.  Music fans will be admitted with an IBMA Business Conference Badge, or a Bluegrass Ramble wristband.

Shuttle service will be offered for conference attendees from the Convention Center to the Lincoln Theatre immediately following the Keynote Address.  At 7:00 p.m., immediately following Lonesome River Band’s Kick-Off Party, the IBMA Bluegrass Ramble showcase will begin.

moonstruck-ibma-posterfinalcAt 10:00 p.m., bluegrass music fans are invited to remain at the Lincoln Theatre for the Moonstruck Management Showcase featuring performances by NewTown at 10:00 p.m., Lonesome River Band at 11:00 p.m., Trinity River Band at 12:00 a.m., followed by the Moonstruck Mash featuring the incredible talents of: Sammy Shelor, Dave Adkins, Brandon Rickman, Jesse Smathers, Kati Penn Williams, Jr. Williams, Sarah Harris, Joshua Harris, and Travis Anderson.  Dave Adkins, who had one of the most successful bluegrass albums of 2016, will also serve as Emcee for the night.

lrb_11.15-214One of the most talented and well-loved banjo players of our time, Sammy Shelor, received a nomination for Banjo Performer of the Year, an Award he has been presented with five times during his impressive career.  Shelor is a member of the Virginia Country Music of Fame, winner of the 2nd Annual Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass, and a multi-award winning SPBGMA Banjo Player of the Year.  While not on his busy tour with Lonesome River Band, Shelor is in high demand as a guest artist. He has performed with the Zac Brown Band, toured and recorded with Alan Jackson promoting Jackson’s “The Bluegrass Album,” along with fellow LRB band member Mike Hartgrove, performed with actor and comedian Martin Short during the 43rd Life Achievement Award Show Honoring Steve Martin in Hollywood.

Since its formation 34 years ago, Lonesome River Band continues its reputation as one of the most respected names in Bluegrass music. Shelor leads the group that is constantly breaking new ground in Acoustic music. With two stellar lead vocalists, Brandon Rickman (guitar) and Jesse Smathers (mandolin), combined with the impressive talents of Mike Hartgrove (fiddle) and Barry Reed (bass), the band seamlessly comes together, performing the trademark sound that fans continue to embrace.

A Bluegrass Open Jam will be held from 5-6pm, a performance by Big Fat Gap from 7:15-8:15pm, followed by the multi-award winning Donna Hughes who will take the stage from 8:40-9:55pm.

Donna Hughes is a Trinity, North Carolina native and was chosen as one of this year’s International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) official Bluegrass Ramble Showcase Artist. As announced this morning during a press conference that aired on SiriusXM’s Bluegrass Junction, three of the band’s nominations are for songs from their Billboard Bluegrass Chart album TURN ON A DIME released by Mountain Home Music Company last fall.

Sammy Shelor is one of the most influential and most in-demand banjo players of our time. His extraordinary talents and magnetic personality are certainly key to his success as he leads the multi-award winning Lonesome River Band. Shelor is a member of the Virginia Music Hall of Fame, a 5-time winner of the International Bluegrass Music Association Banjo Performer of the Year Award, and 3-time winner of the SPBGMA Banjo Performer of the Year Award.

Shelor recorded and performed with country super star Alan Jackson and returned to the Late Show with David Letterman to perform “Blacktop” from Jackson’s The Bluegrass Album.
